Versaperm Vapour Permeability measurement

PRESS RELEASE

The Head in the Sand Approach
to Quality Control

The Head in the Sand Approach to O-Rings and Seals and Testing

Understanding how vapour permeability dramatically effects quality control is hard.  There are two approaches – the head in the sand approach or testing this critically important factor. Versaperm has introduced a multi-gas, multi-application, multi-environment system to measure the vapour permeability of both materials and products or components undergoing the manufacturing process.

The new high-speed testing equipment can produce results within 30 minutes to 24 hours, instead of the weeks taken by conventional testing techniques.
Water, hydrocarbons, oxygen and CO2 vapours cause huge problems – especially when they get into the wrong place.  Water vapour is the world's most damaging contaminate and costs the UK several billion pounds every year through rust and rot.  Vapours permeate through every material and container, causing pharmaceuticals to lose potency, machinery to stick, electronics to fail, food to rot and seals to leak.
Versaperm's equipment can test and measure this vapour permeability for virtually any material but also for products, components, films, laminates, formed components, seals and packaging,.  Permeability can be measured not just for common water vapour problems but for oxygen, carbon dioxide, petrochemicals and all other non-proscribed gases.

It is important to be able to measure both material samples and finished products as manufacturing processes, such as thermoforming, can change a package's permeability by several hundred percent.

Results are accurate in the parts per million to parts per billion ranges depending on the material and vapour.  Where desired Versaperm can also control environmental conditions such as temperature and pressure, even across diurnal and seasonal cycles.

Versaperm also offers laboratory testing consultancy services to manufacturing and packaging companies, universities, and national standards laboratories around the world.
